Seffy
A good friend of mine commented recently that I never write much about Seth on my blog, and reading back over a few posts I realized she is absolutely right. This has to be remedied immediately!!
The reason Seth doesn't make the blog much is because I typically use writing as my way of processing through the hardships and drama of Motherhood. :) And to be honest there is nothing hard about mothering that boy. Once upon a time that didn't use to be true though. Before we got into foster care Seth was the baby of the family and he was a handful. Cory and I would joke that we needed to have more kids simply so we wouldn't be left home alone with him when his older brothers graduated high school and went off to college. More kids you say? NAILED IT.
Seth Carter is a unique soul because he cares so little about what other people think. Not in a defiant rebellious way, it's more of an aloof confidence. It's amazing to me that someone so young can be so intrinsically grounded. You always know where you stand with him. Once a friend from church was teaching his Bible Class and had planned a really cool craft or something. Cory asked him how class was and the friend commented, "Seth isn't really impressed by much is he?" It's true. He passionately loves what he loves and is melancholy about the rest. He won't be pressured into something that he doesn't want to do. Unless of course Levi is the one doing the pressuring. At school, Seth gets called mini-Levi a lot, because of their matching red hair. And he eats it up.
Seth idolizes and copies Levi.
With Titus he is snuggly and affectionate.
He buddies up with Judah.
Tolerates Silas and Canaan.
Is lovingingly indifferent toward little Miss and Mr.
And is madly in love with Gertie.
Out of all my kids, Seth is by far the best at entertaining himself. He can play happily alone for hours, always using sound effects. I remember once sitting in a waiting room with him while Titus was doing a stint in vision therapy. The office had books available for kids, a cartoon playing, and even a few puzzles laid out, but he curled up in the chair next to me for the next hour and used his hands to act as battleships fighting each other.
He always surprises me with his tender side. He can be really lovey dovey and sentimental. This past summer he told me that he's not going to have kids when he grows up because he wants to be an explorer. He thinks his kids will miss him too much when he is traveling, just like he misses Daddy when he is gone, and doesn't want his kids to have to be sad.
His favorite adjective right now is epic. And it is huge compliment if he considers something you've made, done, or said as "epic." He is also famous for saying awesome lines like:
"Daddy when I open this door- you shoot my chicken."
and
"No offense Momma, but your belly feels like jello."
(Offense taken Seth. It's because I birthed your fat head.)
Seth is smart. Like super smart. I have done zero intentional academic teaching of any type with him. He just absorbs it all on his own. I never have to go over his homework or study for spelling words. He aces everything. I don't think he even realizes how smart he is. I remember his first grade teacher catching me after school one day with a knowing grin and whispering quietly so the other kids wouldn't hear, "That boy of yours is smart. Really smart." This year he started GT and he is pumped about it.
His brothers like to tease him that he has anger problems, but it's not really true. He can get frustrated easily, but it's really just due to his little man syndrome. Sometimes he can't keep up with the older two and Judah who is 2 months younger now soars over him and can blow past him in any sport. Seth is not the fastest guy with his little legs. Weirdly, he also has really tiny teeth and at 7 years old has not lost a single one.
I'm not sure what else to say about this boy. He flies under the radar and gets lost in the mix, but I honestly think he's never thought twice about fighting for the scraps of attention that are left at the end of the day. He counters our extroverted, attention-loving, loud, dramatic family with his much needed easy going nature and predictability. From what I have been told about Cory as a young boy, Seth twins his father both in looks and temperament. He is easy, steady, and content. We call him Seth, Seffy, Weffy and Weffs. He loves bugs, pokeman cards, wii games, and building weapons with trio blocks. He is a Momma's boy for sure (they all are frankly) but of our oldest three he was the only one to really give extended family the time of day. He scours and rolls his eyes at Grandpa's teases, loves cooking with Grandma, and schemes with Nana about coming to her and Poppy's house all by himself.
